This past week, from Tuesday to Thursday, I went sailing in ORION along with friends Chris Albert (#2714 FLOTSAM), Dan Meaney (#2024 CLEW-SEA-NUF), and Alan Schaeffer (#1692) across Long Island Sound to Greenport. Chris and I had made similar trips in 2012 and 2016, and it was great to be back. Check out the 2022 photo album here, and don’t forget to click the “info” button when looking at the individual pictures to see the captions.
We left Tuesday morning at 8:00 am, motoring across Long Island Sound and anchoring for lunch off Orient Beach State Park. We then headed to the absolutely beautiful Coecles Harbor where we visited the small cottage on Cedar Island and later rafted up for dinner. When we broke up the raft to anchor individually, we were treated to a truly stunning sunset, and we all had a peaceful night’s rest.
The following morning we motored clockwise around Shelter Island, passing Sag Harbor and exploring the narrow Menantic and West Neck Creeks on the south side of the island. Wind eluded us as we continued on to Greenport, but after visiting the town and having dinner ashore, the wind picked up, and we had a fantastic sail northeast up into Orient Bay and then the shallow Hallock Bay. We anchored for the night in the northwest corner up the Narrow River as far as our boats would go; we awoke the next morning with our boats aground, yet it wasn’t long before the incoming tide enabled us to motor out of the Bay. Although the winds were light, we were able to sail all the way back to Niantic, arriving mid-afternoon this past Thursday. All in all, it was a wonderful trip, and it was certainly a pleasure to sail with Chris, Dan, and Alan.
I hope you enjoy the photos!
